Flanged connection vs clamp connection: how to choose the best pipe connection method?
Date:2024-09-30 12:00:00 Author:Zhejiang Zhifeng Flange Technology Co., Ltd.

Flanne connection and clamp connection are both common pipe connection methods. They each have unique characteristics and applicable scenarios, and there are also some obvious differences.

 I. Characteristics of flange connection

 1. Complex structure but stable: the flange connection is connected by two pipes or equipment with flange plates, and then the flange is tightened with bolts to form a whole. The structure is relatively complex, but the connection is more stable.

 2. Excellent sealing performance: The sealing gasket between the flanges can effectively prevent media leakage and ensure the safety and stability of the connection. The materials of flange gaskets will also be selected according to the pressure level, from low-pressure asbestos pads, high-pressure asbestos pads and tetrafluoroethylene pads to metal pads.

 3. Wide scope of application: Flange connection can be applied to pipeline connections of various pipe diameters, various pressures and various temperatures, especially in harsh environments such as high pressure, high temperature and corrosion. When choosing a flange, factors such as the pH of the medium should also be considered.

 4. Easy disassembly: Although the installation process is relatively complicated, the flange connection is also convenient for disassembly, just loosening the bolt.

 II. Characteristics of clamp connection

 1. Simple structure: The clamp connection is mainly clamped by two symmetrical fixtures to achieve the connection. The fixture is usually fixed by bolts or other fasteners, which is convenient for adjustment and disassembly.

 2. Convenient installation: Due to its simple structure, you only need to aim the fixture at the pipe or equipment, and then tighten the bolts to complete the installation without professional tools and professionals.

 3. Low cost: The cost of the accessories connected to the clamp is relatively low, and the speed of installing and disassembling the accessories is relatively fast, and the corresponding maintenance cost is also low.

 4. Limited applicable scenarios: The clamp connection is mainly suitable for scenarios with low pressure, low temperature and low requirements for sealing performance, such as drainage pipes. At the same time, there are high requirements for the medium, such as good lubricity of the medium, smooth surface without scratches and dents. Generally speaking, the clamp connection is suitable for pipes with a diameter of less than DN50.

III. The difference between flange connection and clamp connection

 1. Structural complexity: The structure of the flange connection is relatively complex, while the structure of the clamp connection is relatively simple.

 2. Sealing performance: The sealing performance of the flange connection is better than that of the clamp connection, especially in high-pressure and high-temperature environments.

 3. Installation convenience: The clamp connection has high convenience in the installation process, while the flange connection needs to be more accurately docked with the flange plate and ensure that the sealing gasket between the flanges is correctly placed, so the installation process is relatively complicated.

 4. Scope of application: Flanged connections are suitable for pipeline connections in various harsh environments, while clamp connections are mainly suitable for low-pressure, low-temperature scenarios with low requirements for sealing performance.

 5. Cost and maintenance: The cost of clamp connection is relatively low, and the maintenance cost is also low; while the flange connection requires precise construction technology and sophisticated equipment during construction, so the investment in manpower, material resources and time is large, and its maintenance cost is also correspondingly high.

Flange connection and clamp connection have their own characteristics and applicable scenarios. When choosing the connection method, comprehensive consideration should be made according to specific needs and actual working conditions to ensure the safety and reliability of pipeline or equipment connection.
